A Window of Opportunity: Inside One Couple’s Kilted Franchise Journey
From the words spoken, “In sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer…”, many know from the very beginning of their commitment that marriage inevitably brings curveballs. For husband and wife Martin and Brenda Villa, one of those curveballs came in the form of entrepreneurship. Becoming franchise owners and business partners was not necessarily part of their original plan, yet one year into operating their Men In Kilts franchise in Kamloops, British Columbia, and years into their marriage, the Villas have discovered that building a business together has deepened both their professional skill sets and their personal bond. Like many franchisees, their journey began with a search for something more—greater autonomy, long-term stability and an opportunity to build something together. What they found in franchising was not only a business model, but a support system. “We came across the opportunity to open our own Men In Kilts, and after learning about the business itself, we decided together that franchising was the ideal route,” said Martin. “Men In Kilts has a strong organization of resources and people who genuinely care about helping franchisees grow. They were invested in our personal and professional success from day one.” For the Villas, franchising with Men In Kilts offered a structured pathway into business ownership without starting from scratch. The established brand recognition, operational systems, training and ongoing support reduced much of the uncertainty that often deters first-time entrepreneurs. That foundation proved especially valuable as a married couple entering business together. Clear systems, defined processes and franchisor guidance provided guardrails while they navigated their new roles. “Having the support of an experienced franchise network gave us confidence,” Brenda added. “We weren’t alone. There was a blueprint to follow, and that allowed us to focus on execution and growth.” The first year of business ownership is often compared to the first year of marriage: exciting, eye-opening and full of valuable lessons. For the Villas, the parallels were striking. Like most new franchise owners, they experienced natural growing pains, but layered on top of those challenges was the dynamic of working side by side as spouses. “Working with my husband has given me an even greater opportunity to learn from him and about him,” said Brenda. “I understand his motivations and hopes for the future on a deeper level. Our communication has grown exponentially, and that’s made us a stronger team.” The Villas quickly realized that building a business together required more than operational alignment—it required intentional time management. As owners, it’s easy for work to fill every available hour, especially in the first year. But for Brenda, one of the most meaningful lessons has been the importance of protecting what matters most. “I also learned that family time is very valuable,” she shared. By prioritizing time together outside of work, the Villas have found that they return to the business more focused, energized, and aligned. For them, valuing family time isn’t a distraction from success, but rather it’s a driver of it, strengthening both their relationship and their leadership. “Having your home be both your business and your castle is challenging but also very rewarding,” Martin explained. “After just one year, I can see how those two worlds are slowly merging into one powerful force. Having common goals binds us together.” If there is one theme that defines the Villas’ first year, it is communication. “Communication is key,” Brenda emphasized. “Always respect each other, especially in business, and keep an open mind to learning from your partner.” The Villas have found that entrepreneurship magnifies strengths and weaknesses. Disagreements can arise quickly under the pressure of deadlines, customer issues or financial decisions. For married franchisees, the ability to separate professional debate from personal emotion becomes essential. Franchise ownership demands resilience. Market shifts, staffing challenges and operational hurdles require adaptability, especially in service-based businesses like Men In Kilts. “Stay positive,” Martin advised. “Have trust and faith in your skills. Stay open to learning, and be willing to innovate and evolve with the industry.” That mindset has allowed the Villas to approach obstacles as opportunities rather than setbacks. By leaning into the Men In Kilts’ network and learning from fellow franchisees, they have continuously refined their processes and improved efficiency. In franchising, collaboration extends beyond the married couple. Peer networks, corporate support teams and shared best practices create an ecosystem designed for collective growth. The Villas credit this broader franchise community as a significant contributor to their early success. Perhaps the most rewarding outcome of their journey so far has been watching both their business and family flourish in tandem. “Owning our Men In Kilts business has proven to be deeply rewarding, both for our careers and our personal lives,” Martin shared. “We’re building something together that supports our family and reflects our values.” For many couples, franchising represents more than income generation. It offers a pathway to legacy-building, flexibility and shared accomplishment. While entrepreneurship can strain relationships when mismanaged, it can also strengthen them when rooted in trust and shared purpose. The Villas’ experience highlights an important reality for prospective franchisees: success in franchising is not solely about operational execution. It is equally about alignment, communication and commitment— to the business and to one another. Franchising can be a powerful vehicle for couples ready to build something together. As the Villas have learned, when shared vision meets structured support, both marriage and business can thrive. What began as a curveball has evolved into a beautifully unified shared mission.
